In Melbourne where Russell Street becomes Lygon Street there is a monument to the 8 hour ideal. 8 hours work, 8 hours recreation, & 8 hours rest.
The monument has stood at this intersection for nearly 100 years to remind us all to strive for a life that enriches and heals us.
Please wear these socks when you visit this monument. When you get there remember the workers who created and embodied this campaign, and raised this spire first in Spring Street, Melbourne.
Remember too that we still all fight for a fair day’s work, the right to rest and recuperate, and the right to fair remuneration.
The dignity of work and fair treatment remains our fight 100 years on from when this monument was raised, and will still be 100 years from now.
